Pediatric Weight Clinic

“Helping overweight children and youth create long-lasting lifestyle changes”

PuzzleAt the Pediatric Weight Clinic (PWC) we help overweight children and youth create lifestyle changes. Theses changes lead to a healthy, positive future that includes, but is not solely focused on, weight loss and weight management.  The treatment program involves the child, their family, and a team of professionals who provide one-on-one psychological, medical, nutritional, and physical activity support.

We are currently in our 5th year of operation and have assisted over 500 families to date.

Located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the Pediatric Weight Clinic is the first of its kind in Western Canada.  We invite you to find out more about our program and the team.

Healthy Weights for Healthy Kids Study

The Pediatric Obesity Foundation is working in collaboration with the Pediatric Weight Clinic in conducting a study on treatment for childhood weight management.  The study is recruiting children between the ages of 8 - 16 with a BMI greater than the 85th percentile for age.  Children who meet this criteria are encouraged to contact the Pediatric Weight Clinic (403-547-8992) or Roberta Corbett to set up a pre-screening appointment.  The program will be fully funded by the Pediatric Obesity Foundation.

POF Now Offering Financial Support

The Pediatric Obesity Foundation is now offering financial support to families seeking treatment for pediatric obesity. Please refer to the Pediatric Obesity Foundation link for further details.

One Patient's Success Story

Aaron WooThis 9-year-old girl wanted to make some changes and went through the Healthy Weights for Healthy Kids program in the spring/summer of 2009. Her goal was to climb Sulphur Mountain in August and though it took three hours, she succeeded.

The family has since moved to Florida. The following is an update sent to the clinic in October, two months after she finished her treatment at the Pediatric Weight Clinic. She continues to lose weight and be active.

“Well, we have been here in Florida for about 6 weeks. Chenoa is doing great! She swims every day in her own pool. She really likes to do stretches and jogging and even yoga in the pool! We make up a lot of fun activities! We already bought bikes, and have been out a few times. We have been walking and researching some good "hikes" (more like walks here as the highest point in FL is 360 feet! LOL!)

Chenoa has been great with her food as well. She really distinguishes now between need and want, and she makes great choices. She also gets that if she has a "treat" that she needs to do some extra exercise to balance it. We have been regularly weighing her (that was the other item that we bought right away!). Last Thursday we weighed on and she is down 28.5 pounds from when she first weighed in at the clinic.

Chenoa looks and acts like a different kid now. It’s a really good thing that her new school requires uniforms, because none of her clothes were fitting anymore anyway! At her heaviest she weighed almost the same as I did at the time and with the same advice that you gave Chenoa, I have also lost about 10 pounds! I never expected or even thought that she would be able to lose 20 pounds, let alone 30! I am so glad that we got into the program. It really has meant so much to her and to me.

I have been thinking about all of you and how I miss that support and understanding. It was never a chore to come in for appointments, we looked forward to it! We both really wanted to let you know how things were going here (but especially Chenoa, who really misses coming and seeing you all!)

We are continuing to discover our new neighbourhood and though she’s not surfing yet, we are going on a zipline safari, swimming with the manatees, and kayaking along the Crystal River. She is, as always, my adventurer and outdoor girl! Oh, and the fact that she climbed a mountain has been a huge hit here! Everyone is in awe of her, and of course, we made sure to show off all the pictures! She did a speech in calls about her favourite place, the mountains, and she ended that the speech with "I climbed the mountain and reached my goal!")

Thank you all for believing in her and in me! Your support and kindness has been amazing!”
